The Senior Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems and equipment on an oil and gas rig or production facility. This includes diesel engines, hydraulic systems, pumps, generators, compressors, drilling equipment, and rotating machinery. The role requires a deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles, preventive maintenance techniques, and safety regulations to ensure smooth operations and minimal downtime.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Equipment Maintenance & Repair

  • Perform preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on all mechanical equipment.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, mud pumps, draw works, winches, compressors, and rotating equipment.
  • Oversee maintenance and repair work to ensure compliance with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) standards and industry regulations.
  • Ensure the availability of spare parts, tools, and consumables required for efficient operations.

2. Troubleshooting & Fault Diagnosis

  • Diagnose mechanical faults, hydraulic failures, and system breakdowns.
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring mechanical issues and recommend solutions.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals for troubleshooting.
  • Use diagnostic tools and vibration analysis equipment to identify equipment issues.

3. Compliance & Safety

  • Follow and enforce HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) regulations and best practices.
  • Ensure LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures are strictly followed during maintenance activities.
  • Participate in safety drills, toolbox talks, and risk assessments.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, work orders, and compliance documentation.

4. Supervision & Training

  • Lead and mentor junior mechanics and technicians in maintenance best practices.
  • Train rig personnel on basic mechanical troubleshooting and equipment handling.
  • Ensure team members adhere to industry standards and safety protocols.

5. Coordination & Reporting

  • Coordinate with drilling, production, and maintenance teams for planned maintenance activities.
  • Provide daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance reports to supervisors.
  • Assist in procurement by identifying required spare parts, lubricants, and tools.


Skills

Education & Experience

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience (Minimum 5 years as Senior Mechanics) in oil and gas mechanical maintenance, preferably in drilling rigs, onshore platforms, or production facilities.
  • Strong experience working with CAT, Waukesha, Cummins, and Detroit Diesel engines.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and rotating equipment used in oilfield operations.
  • Experience with API, ISO, OSHA, and HSE regulations related to mechanical maintenance.
  • NOV experience or CANRIG experience

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in reading mechanical schematics and technical manuals.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills using vibration analysis, thermography, and ultrasonic testing.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make quick decisions in high-risk environments.
  • Excellent teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Certifications (Preferred):


H2S Awareness & Safety Certification

✔ Rig Pass / IADC or API Certification

✔ BOSIET / HUET (for offshore operations)

✔ OSHA / NEBOSH Safety Certification
