Animal Health Specialist-USAID Jordan: Prevent, Detect, Respond Primary Health Care Activity

JOB SUMMARY:

The Animal Health Specialist will support the implementation of activities to strengthen zoonotic and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance in animals for the anticipated USAID-funded Global Health Security project to enhance global health priorities in Jordan with the general objective to prevent, detect, and respond rapidly and effectively to public health threats of international concern including naturally occurring outbreaks and intentional or accidental releases of dangerous pathogens. S/he will be responsible for strengthening the capacity and systems for zoonotic and AMR surveillance in the animal sector.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides technical assistance to collect, assemble, review data, prepares reports and shares findings on zoonotic diseases and AMR/AMU trends per national, regional, and global standards and requirements.
  • Provides technical assistance/participates in animal health investigations and mapping/assessing antibiotic distribution and use in livestock.
  • Provides expert advice for assessments and improvements of Animal Disease Diagnostic Reference Laboratory and Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratories.
  • Provides training and technical support to animal health laboratories to be able to detect priority zoonotic diseases.
  • Provides technical assistance to strengthen quality systems in animal health laboratories.
  • Supports surveillance activities for priority zoonotic diseases and AMR by providing technical assistance to improve detection capacities.
  • Provides technical assistance for sample collection, coordination, and transport.
  • Conducts supportive supervision and monitoring of, and onsite coaching and mentoring to laboratories and surveillance sites.
  • Provides support for developing and/or reviewing all documents, guidelines, and SOPs about animal health, such as surveillance plans and diagnostic SOPs.
  • Works closely with the One Health Advisor to define and adjust annual work plans and implement technical activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Usual office working conditions.
  • Ability to travel domestically at least 25%.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or its international equivalent in animal science or other relevant subject.
  • At least five years of experience in animal health, focusing on zoonotic diseases, veterinary public health, and veterinary technology.
  • Registered Veterinary Technician/Technologist is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in diagnostics, surveillance, epidemiology, AMR, or One Health implementation.
  • Jordanians are encouraged to apply 
  • Proficiency in English language – Arabic is an advantage
