Academic Counsellor

The Academic Counsellor reports under the general direction of the Dean of Education, coordinate the counselling activities for undergraduate & postgraduate learners about specific academic or self-directed individualized programs, academic, personal or career matters which interfere with achievement of academic potential. Coordinate and implement programs to promote retention.

Responsibilities


  • Assesses learner interest, aptitudes, and abilities in order to assist in academic and career planning.
  • Counsel learner in developing a specific academic program including choice of specialty and course selections
  • Acts as a liaison with faculty, education centers and other University offices. Provides outreach to enhance learner development, improve the quality of the learning environment, and counsel learners to meet academic and career goals. Coordinates programs for learners with unique goals and needs. Plans and provides outreach programs for high-risk learners to promote retention. Serves as a resource to other academic advisors/counsellors concerning learner with difficulties.
  • Plans and implements programs to help learners with academic and career decisions. Some examples are learner workshops, departmental information sessions, or major fairs. Refers learners for various competency exams, evaluates results of placement test, and recommends an appropriate program based on test results.
  • Provides personal, vocational, and other non-academic counselling as appropriate.
  • Provides outreach to prospective undergraduate and postgraduate learners during Orientation, regional campus visits, and on an individual basis.
  • Implements and enforces the Education Shield rules and regulations. Make decisions regarding these regulations as delegated.
  • Serves as a resource to faculty and professional staff, to help interpret academic rules and regulations. Develops and implements in-service training workshops, videos, and other means to improve academic advising.
  • Works closely with other external partners like DOH, University offices to promote consistency and uniformity of judgments regarding such matters as enforcement of academic requirements, academic probation and dismissal, transfer in or out of programs, and other similar issues.
  • Creates computer programs to maintain learner records and determine progress toward meeting the programs academic requirements and to assess eligibility for graduation. Compiles computer generated databases and statistical program evaluations. Maintains appropriate files and records.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Counselling Education or related field (Master’s degree Preferred)
  • At least five years’ experience advising and counselling learners.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and counselling skills.
  • Knowledge of academic programs in area to be served.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound analytical judgment and to work without close supervision.
  • Knowledge of special learner populations, if required by the position

Additional Requirements:


  • Proficiency in both English and Arabic language
  • Proficiency in software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio.
